Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to compare game formations and strategic variations between the Turkish Women's Super League and the UEFA Women's Champions League, aiming to gain a general understanding of the tactics employed in women's football.
Methods: The research covers 26 matches played during the 2022–2023 season of the Turkish Women's Super League and the 2022 UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final. An observational and computer-assisted notation method was employed to easily collect data on the game formations and strategic elements used during the matches.
Results: According to the findings, the most preferred formation in both the Turkish Super League (76.9%) and the UEFA Champions League (65.4%) was the 4-3-3 formation. It was observed that attacks were predominantly concluded in the central zone, with right-central transitions being particularly common. These distributions were found to be more effective in the UEFA Champions League (66.4%) compared to the Turkish Super League (55.8%). Additionally, in the Champions League, attacks that began in the wide areas and transitioned into central zones were more evenly distributed than in the Turkish Super League. It was also determined that while attacks in the Turkish League occurred more frequently in the right zones (right flank 41.4%, right center 25.6%), in the Champions League they were more common in the left zones (left flank 36.1%, left center 28.9%). Furthermore, it was concluded that in the Turkish Super League, ball recoveries were more effective in the second defensive third (50.7%) compared to the first (41.7%) and third (13.1%) defensive thirds in the Champions League.
Conclusion: Based on the findings, teams in the UEFA Champions League demonstrated a more structured playing style with well-planned strategies and integrated transitions compared to the teams in the Turkish Super League. Therefore, in order for the Turkish Super League to adapt to the evolving nature of football, training models and strategies should be revised and improved accordingly.

Kadın Futbolunda Türkiye Ligi ve Şampiyonlar Ligi Karşılaştırılması: Hücum ve Savunma Analizi

Year 2025, Volume: 11 Issue: 2, 160 - 168, 30.06.2025
