Student Opinions on the Efficiency of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Texts in Teaching Intangible Cultural Heritage Elements

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine student opinions on the efficiency of AI-generated texts in teaching elements of intangible cultural heritage in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. Transitional periods, birth, marriage, and death rituals, which constitute a significant part of Turkish cultural heritage, play an essential role in individuals’ social lives in both the linguistic and cultural dimensions. Therefore, this research investigates the extent to which these rituals can be accurately represented through texts produced by artificial intelligence in the context of foreign language instruction. The study was conducted using action research, one of the qualitative research designs. The participants consisted of 20 international students studying at the Turkish Language Teaching Center (DİLMER) of a university in Ankara, all of whom had C1-level Turkish proficiency. Nine texts about birth, marriage, and death rituals were generated using the AI tool Gemini. Participants’ opinions on these texts were gathered through semi-structured interviews; the obtained data were analyzed using content analysis. The reliability of the data was supported by expert opinions and direct quotations. The findings indicated that AI-generated texts were largely insufficient in accurately and deeply reflecting Turkish culture. The texts contained incomplete or inaccurate cultural details, superficial descriptions, and a lack of symbolic and oral literary elements. Moreover, the language level of the texts was below expectations, corresponding roughly to the A2–B1 range rather than advanced academic Turkish. Consequently, it was determined that AI tools can facilitate the production of teaching materials for Turkish as a foreign language but they remain limited in conveying cultural context and local values.

Yapay Zekâ Destekli Metinlerin Somut Olmayan Kültürel Miras Unsurlarını Öğretmedeki Yeterliğine Yönelik Öğrenci Görüşleri

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı yapay zekâ destekli metinlerin Türkçenin yabancı dil olarak öğretiminde somut olmayan kültürel miras unsurlarını öğretmedeki yeterliğine yönelik öğrenci görüşlerini belirlemektir. Türk kültürel mirasının önemli bir parçasını oluşturan geçiş dönemleri; doğum, evlenme ve ölüm ritüelleri, bireylerin sosyal yaşamında hem dilsel hem de kültürel boyutlarıyla önemli işlevler taşımaktadır. Bu nedenle araştırmada, söz konusu ritüellerin yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretiminde yapay zekâ tarafından üretilen metinlerle ne ölçüde yansıtılabildiği sorgulanmıştır. Çalışma, nitel araştırma desenlerinden eylem araştırmasıyla yürütülmüştür. Katılımcı grubunu, Ankara’daki bir üniversitenin Dil Öğretim Merkezinde (DİLMER) öğrenim gören ve Türkçe yeterlik düzeyi C1 olan 20 uluslararası öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada Gemini adlı yapay zekâ aracı kullanılarak doğum, evlenme ve ölüm ritüellerine ilişkin dokuz metin oluşturulmuştur. Katılımcıların bu metinlere yönelik görüşleri yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yoluyla toplanmış; elde edilen veriler içerik analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Verilerin güvenirliği uzman görüşü ve doğrudan alıntılarla desteklenmiştir. Bulgular, yapay zekâ tarafından üretilen metinlerin Türk kültürünü derinlemesine ve doğru biçimde yansıtmakta yetersiz kaldığını göstermiştir. Metinlerde eksik veya yanlış kültürel bilgiler, yüzeysel anlatımlar ve sembolik değerlerin göz ardı edilmesi dikkat çekmiştir. Ayrıca metinlerin dil düzeyi, akademik Türkçe beklentisinin altında kalmış, A2-B1 düzeyine yakın bulunmuştur. Sonuç olarak, yapay zekâ araçlarının Türkçenin yabancı dil olarak öğretiminde öğretim materyali üretimini kolaylaştırabileceği, ancak kültürel bağlamı ve yerel değerleri tam olarak aktarmada sınırlı kaldığı belirlenmiştir.
