Evaluation of Vertebral Artery System in a Healthy Population by Using Colour Duplex Doppler Ultrasonography
Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the morphologic and hemodynamic specifications of the extracranial vertebral artery by using colour duplex Doppler ultrasonography (US). Normal data of vessel diameters, peak systolic, end-diastolic flow velocities and flow volume were obtained from the each vertebral artery of 85 healthy volunteers. Data were classified according to side and sex differences and results were given as mean value ± standart deviation. In men, diameter of vertebral artery was found 3,4 ± 0,6 for right side and 3,4 ± 0,5 mm for left side, while in women vessel diameter was found 3,0 ± 0,4 mm on right and 3,3 ± 0,4 mm on left. Left vertebral artery was found dominant for both sexes and the rate of vertebral artery hypoplasia was found as %10,5. In men, peak systolic flow velocity was found 37,5± 9,2 cm/s on right and 39,8 ± 11,4 cm/s on left; end diastolic flow velocity 13,7 ± 3,6 cm/s on right and 13,7 ± 4,4 cm/s on left and flow volume 96,4 ± 47,8 ml/min on right and 99,7 ± 46,6 ml/min on left side. In women mean value of peak systolic flow velocity was measured as 40,3 ± 12,1 cm/s on right and 40,7± 10,9 cm/s on left; end diastolic flow velocity 14, 8 ± 4,6 cm/s on right and 16 ± 4,8 cm/s on left and flow volume 85,1 ± 33,9 ml/min on right and 101,7 ± 43,8 ml/min on left side.
