Peroneal Tubercle and Trochlea on Late Byzantine Era (13th Century, AD) Calcanei

Abstract

Metric or nonmetric measurements of bony variations reflecting the characteristics of the population's uniqueness are gateways to anthropologic guidance. This led us to search the occurrence of the peroneal tubercle and trochlea on a group of calcanei belonging to the 13th century Byzantines. Among 147 calcanei (65 right and 82 left) a peroneal tubercle was observed on 28.5 % (10 % right, 18.5 % left), and a trochlea was present on 65 % (26 % right, 39 % left) of the calcanei. There was no side predilection. It is clear that variations of the peroneal tubercle may cause clinical symptoms as well as complicating the painful foot syndromes. Search for greater series of peroneal tubercle incidences would help clinicians to decide over “painful foot syndromes”.
