Overweight And Obesity Among 6- 14 Year- Aged Schoolchildren At Six Elementary Schools in Orhangazi- Bursa

Abstract

This study carried out done between April 17, 2000 and January 30, 2002 among 5795 schoolchildren aged 6-14 at six elementary schools in Orhangazi- Bursa. In this study, it was aimed to measure the heights and weights of the children, to calculate the Body Mass Indexes (BMI) and to determine the prevalence of the overweight and obesity among these age groups. The values of BMI was evaluated according to the tables and graphics which was published in 2000 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The students whose BMIs were between 85- 94 percentils were accepted as overweight and ≥ 95 percentils were accepted as obese. In the study, the prevalence of overweight among girls were 9.1 %, among boys were 8.4 % and the prevalence of obesity among girls were 1.5 %, among boys were 1.8 %. When the gender was evaluated by the obesity and overweight, it was found that the difference was not statistically significant (χ2= 0.79 p>0.05; χ2= 0.94 p>0.05). In our study, it is found out that the prevalence of overweight among girls increases statistically significantly as age groups increases and the prevalence of obesity among boys decreases statistically significantly as age groups increases (χ2 for linear trend= 13.60 p= 0.0002; χ2 for linear trend = 15.15 p= 0.0001). The prevalence of overweight was higher among 6- 14 year old schoolchildren in Orhangazi and it was thought that obesity could be a health problem among this age group in the future. It will be suitable that the future studies should be conducted to determine the risk factors for overweight and obesity.

Bursa İli Orhangazi İlçesi 6 Merkez İlköğretim Okulunda 6-14 Yaş Grubu Öğrencilerde Kilo Fazlalığı ve Obezite

Abstract

Bu çalışma, 17 Nisan 2000 ve 30 Ocak 2002 tarihleri arasında Bursa ili Orhangazi ilçe merkezindeki 6 ilköğretim okulunda okuyan 6-14 yaş 5795 çocukta yapılmıştır. Çalışmada çocukların boy ve ağırlıkları ölçülüp, Beden Kütle İndeksleri (BKI)hesaplanarak, bu yaş grubunda kilo fazlalığı (overweight) ve obezite prevalansının saptanması amaçlanmıştır. BKI değerleri Hastalıkları Önleme ve Kontrol Merkezi'nin (CDC) 2000 yılında yayınladığı tablo ve grafiklere göre değerlendirilmiştir. BKİ 85-94 persantil arasında olanlar kilo fazlalığı, ≥ 95 persantil olan çocuklar obez olarak kabul edilmiştir. Çalışmada kilo fazlalığı prevalansı kızlarda %9.1, erkeklerde %8.4; obezite prevalansı kızlarda %1.5, erkeklerde %1.8 olarak bulunmuştur. Cinsiyet durumu obezite ve kilo fazlalığı için değerlendirildiğinde anlamlı bir fark saptanamamıştır (χ2= 0.79 p>0.05; χ2= 0.94 p>0.05). Çalışmamızda kızlarda kilo fazlalığı prevalansının yaş grupları büyüdükçe anlamlı olarak arttığı, erkeklerde obezite prevalansının yaş grupları büyüdükçe anlamlı olarak azaldığı saptanmıştır (χ2 eğim= 13.60 p= 0.0002; χ2 eğim= 15.15 p= 0.0001). Orhangazi ilçe merkezindeki 6-14 yaş grubu çocuklarda saptanan kilo fazlalığı prevalansı yüksektir ve gelecekte obezitenin bu yaş grubunda bir sağlık sorunu olarak karşımıza çıkacağını düşündürmektedir. Bundan sonraki çalışmaların obezite ve kilo fazlalığı için risk faktörlerinin neler olduğunun saptanmasına yönelik yapılması uygun olacaktır.
