Incidence of Helicobacter Pylori in Patients with Epigastric Pain Admitted to the Emergency Department and the Value of Serum IgG Test as a Diagnostic Tool

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity of the Rapid H.pylori Cassette and the urease test in determining the incidence of H.pylori in patients with epigastric pain admitted to the emergency department (ED). The study was prospectively conducted in our ED from January 2000 to February 2001. Serum, obtained by centrifuging 2-3 cc blood drawn from the patients, was used in Rapid H.pylori Cassette test. Then endoscopy, including urease test, was performed in all patients. Forty –seven patients (21 males, 26 females) were enrolled. They had a mean age of 38.5 (16-71) years. Endoscopy revealed 19 gastritis, 10 peptic ulcer disease. No statistically significant difference was found between urease test and Rapid H.pylori test in detection of H.pylori. When compared with the urease test, specificity and sensitivity of the Rapid H.pylori test were found 81.4 % and 95% respectively. Rapid H.pylori Cassette test is a non-invasive and easily applied test and it has been demonstrated that sensitivity and specificity values comparable with invasive H. pylori urease test. Use of Rapid H.pylori Cassette test can be recommended when endoscopy is deemed inappropriate.
