Sleep Apnea Syndrome and Traffic Accidents
Abstract
Drowsiness and lack of concentration are frequent causes of traffic accidents. Recent studies have reported that 1-16% of crashes may be attributed to the driver falling asleep or being drowsy. Respiratory disorders during sleep, such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), are common causes of excessive sleepiness and of an increased risk of automobile crashes. OSAS is characterized by repeated collapses of the upper airway during sleep, resulting in nocturnal hypoxemia and fragmented sleep. Patients with OSAS are at 2-3 times greater risk of having an accident than those who are free of OSAS or general population. In this review, we have emphasized the relationship between OSAS and traffic accidents.
