The effect of hemithyroidectomy on blood calcium level
Abstract
Bilateral thyroid operation concerns all of four parathyroid glands, which are in close contact with the capsule of thyroid. Hemithyroidectomy, which is a more limited operation can effect directly only two parathyroids settled on one side of the thyroid. That is why hypocalcemia rate after unilateral operation is lower. The aim of this study is to assess serum calcium changes and hypocalcemia after hemithyroidectomy. For this purpose, serum total calcium levels of 53 consecutive patients undergoing hemithyroidectomy procedure were obtained before the operation, between 12-24 hours after the operation, and at 1 month after surgery. When the data from these patients were examined, transient hypocalcemia developed in 12 (22.6%) patients, but all of these patients were asyptomatic. In conclusion, after hemithyroidectomy, serum total calcium level statistically decreases and transient hypocalcemia develops in a certain part of the cases, but it is usually asymptomatic. This situation can allow early patient discharge without a need for biochemical tests or calcium supplementation following the surgery.
