Custody and Prison Deaths Auotopsied in Bursa

Abstract

As there is a great concern and reaction from press, society and families to custody and prison deaths, legal authorities and forensic specalists should have assiduous responsibility. In this study we aimed to investigate cases of custody and prison deaths autopsied in 5 years in Bursa in different aspects and to emphasize their medicolegal dimension. Records of 3065 autopsied cases in Forensic Medicine Council Bursa Chairmanship were reviewed and identified 53 custody and prison death cases were investigated in different aspects. 90.6 % of the cases were male. The cases were most common in age group of 31-40 years, natural deaths were the main origin of death in 56.6% of cases. In our country, further studies are necessary to find out correct and real data on custody and prison deaths to detect risk factors and to establish preventive stragies.
