Outcome of the Next Pregnancy in Women with Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: Prognostic Factors

Abstract

Prognostic factors that could predict the outcome of a consecutive pregnancy were studied retrospectively in 68 women with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). Pregnancies that culminated in a live birth or were still ungoing successfully were grouped together and were compared to pregnancies that resulted in yet another loss with regard to demographic characteristics, time of pregnancy loss and etiology. Cases with an unfavorable outcome had a higher number of previous miscarriages, whereas cases with a favorable outcome had a higher probability of having suffered embryonic losses. Abnormalities of glucose metabolism were encountered more often in women who were unsuccessful another time. Although the prevalence of thrombophilias was similar between the groups, multiple thrombophilias were more common in once again losers. Regression analysis revealed previous embryonic losses, abnormalities of glucose metabolism, age and number of previous losses to be the independent prognostic factors that could be used to predict the success of a next pregnancy. Our results indicate that of women with RPL who are aggressively treated for any underlying etiology, those with previous early embryonic losses and without abnormalities of glucose metabolism can be promised a successful outcome.
