The Variations of the Proximal Femurs Belong To the Byzantine Period

Abstract

Allen's fossa, Poirier's facet, plaque, exostosis in trochanteric fossa and the third trochanter are the variations closely related to the habit of squatting, which are seen on the proximal part of femurs. Totally, 107 proximal part of femurs of the young adult males belong to 13rd century Byzantine Period were investigated for these variations. Allen's fossa, Poirier's facet, plaque, exostosis in trochanteric fossa and the third trochanter were observed at the rates of 1.6, 4.5, 4.5, 22.0 and 15.0 percentages respectively. Presence of third trochanter and exostosis in trochanteric fossa at higher rates in males than females were considered to be related to the hard living conditions rather than heredity.
