Dosimetric Analysis of Electron Beam at Different Source to Surface Distances

Abstract

In electron beam treatment, various calculation algorithms have been described for the change of dose disturbation and profiles caused by surface disorders and different source-skin-distance. The main issue of those algorithms is the necessity of dose profile changing measurement for each machine. The aim of this study was to experimentally assess the output values which were obtained by calculating the algorithms. The output scores for 6, 9, 12 and 15 MeV electron beams were obtained in different source-skin-distance as well as in different field sizes. Results were compared with the values which were obtained by using effective SSD method. When the output values were compared, the percentage difference in small field sizes was found to be more. Due to the reduction of field size and energy, the effective SSD is reduced. In higher energies, the measured dose is higher because of the high amount of scattering electrons. In particular for small field sizes and low energies, the effective SSD method gains more importance. Hence, in small fields and low energies, depending upon variable SSD, measurements should be done and gap correcting factors should be detected for each linear accelerator and air correcting factor should be used in Monitor Unit (MU) calculation.
