Methemoglobinemia Developing in a Patient After Administration of Lidocaine as Topical Anesthesia During Transesophageal Echocardiography

Abstract

Methemoglobinemia is a serious haemathologic disease characterised with incapability of sufficient oxygen delivery to tissues and cyanosis when iron within hemoglobin in ferrous form (Fe+2) is oxidized to ferric form (Fe+3). Methemoglobinemia may be congenital or acquired. Congenital methemoglobinemia is caused by defficiency or insufficiency of several reductive enzymes and is usually seen from birth. The acquired form is caused when contact with several oxidizing agents. And in this form symptoms are usually resolved with treatment. We mention about a case who developed methemoglobinemia after lidocaine administration.
