The Comparison of Lupus Patient's Characteristics with or without Renal Involvement on Administration
Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) may have diverse initial clinical findings because of its heterogeneity. Renal involvement (RI) may adversely affect prognosis. In this study, we aimed to retrospectively acquire the admission data of newly diagnosed SLE patients from their medical charts, and compare these data among the patients with or without RI. The age, sex, clinical and laboratory data of the 70 SLE patients that diagnosed from 1986 to 1999 years were recorded. Kidney biopsy was performed from the patients who have RI according to the American College of Rheumatology criterion. Symptoms, findings and laboratory data of SLE patients with or without RI were examined and compared in detail. Gender distributions and age of onset were similar in both groups. The most frequently arthralgia (67.1%), fatigue (61.4%), anemia (54.3%) and photosensitivity (42.9%) were seen. Class III and class IV lupus nephritis were most frequently detected in 42 patients with RI. Nausea and eye involvement were higher in the RI group. Although it is not statistically significant; patients with RI have less skin or musculoskeletal involvement and constitutional symptoms, and more hematologic and gastrointestinal involvement. Therefore, we believe that multicenter prospective studies with greater number of patients are required on this subject whether there is a relationship between RI and other signs and symptoms or not.
