Interleukin-6: One of The Leading Actors on Inflammation
Abstract
In the last decade a new era was opened in the field of rheumatology with the introduction of biologic therapies. The new perspectives in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases caused the development of new therapeutic agents. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and its receptor system was discovered in the 1980's. IL-6 has a pivotal role in mediating the T cell, B cell differentiation, antibody production and acute phase response. IL-6 also mediates many systemic manifestations of the rheumatoid arthritis such as fatique, anemia, bone resorption and lipid metabolism. Inhibiting the activity of IL-6 could offer a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of some immune inflammatory diseases.
