Uterine Artery Embolization for Myomas Treatment: Early Results

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of uterine myoma embolization in our institution. Myomas are the most common gynaecological problem experienced by women, in 20–40% of women of childbearing age. Symptomatic myomas can cause a diversity of symptoms, which can be divided into four categories: bleeding symptoms (irregular and/or heavy menstrual bleeding), pain, bulk-related symptoms and subfertility. Traditionally, symptomatic myomas have been treated with myomectomy or hysterectomy. UME has been re-ported to be an effective and safe alternative to treat myomas UME is a percutaneous transcatheter embolisation technique using embolisa-tion material to occlude the (end-) arteries supplying the myoma. UME blocks off the blood supply to myomas, causing them to shrink. UME should be the preferred treatment option for the fertil patients to whom hysterectomy is offered or hysterectomy need is predicted during myomectomy.
