Electrophysiological Evaluation of Patients with Palpitation and/or Syncope; 10 Years Experience
Abstract
Palpitation and syncope are common in clinical practice of cardiology and may be associated with diseases which can cause morbidity and mortality. Although there are non-invasive methods for diagnosis, in some cases these methods are insufficient for certain diagnosis. In this study we investigated the relationship between the EPS results and age and gender differences among patients who referred to Uludag Uni-versity Cardiology Outpatient Clinic with complaints of syncope and/or palpitation but could not be diagnosed with non-invasive diagnostic methods and underwent EPS. In this retrospective and descriptive study we analyzed 1047 patients (506 females, 541 males). Patients were grouped according to age and EPS results were compared with gender and age groups. 48% of patients were male and 5 2% of patients were female. Without distinction of age and gender, most patients had normal EPS (40%), the least detected arrythmia was atrial flutter (3%). Atrioventricular node reentry tachycardia (AVNRT) was significantly higher in females (p<0.001) and Ventricular tachycardia (VT) was significantly higher in males (p<0.001).EPS is necessary for patients with palpitations and /or syncope whom non-invasive techniques were not sufficient. But it should be noted that even if the patients undergo EPS explanation of these symptoms may not be possible.
