Evaluation of Herbal Product Use in Patients Undergoing Surgery
Abstract
Recently, many kinds of herbal products are used besides medical drugs and they are also believed not to have any side effects and toxicity.In our study, we aimed to investigate frequency of patients’ herbal product usage preoperatively, pattern of herbal products and perioperative complications in patients using herbal products. It was determined that %54.2 of the patients enrolled to this study, were using herbal products. Compared to patients not taking natural products, patients taking natural products were significantly older (p<0,05). When evaluating overall number of the patients, number of women patients using herbal products is higher than the number of women patients who don’t use herbal products (p<0,05). When evaluating the perioperative complications, hypotension occurred in %13.6 of the patients while nocomplications occurred in %86.4. Even if we didn’t observe significant complications, because of the widespread utilization and complications in literature, patients using herbal products must be followed for their side effects, toxicity and drug interactions.
