Evaluation of Preoperative and Postoperative Scrotal Ultrasonography Findings of 69 Consecutive Inguinal Hernia Cases Treated by Lichtenstein Hernioplasty: Single Surgeon Experience

Abstract

The aim was to evaluate the follow-up results of patients underwent tension-free mesh hernioplasty, observe and examine how affected the cord structures by this foreign body and compare the results with data from the literature. Sixty-nine consecutive patients with inguinal hernia who underwent tension-free hernioplasty and had no additional scrotal pathology at initial diagnosis, were evaluated by scrotal ultra-sonographic examination performed preoperatively and on the 6th month postoperatively. Additionally, patients were examined in terms of recurrence and complications. Preoperative ultrasonography of sixty-nine patients revealed no pathology in 40 patients (58%) accompanied with inguinal hernia and revealed various levels of hydrocele and spermatocele in 29 patients (42%). In three patients, varicocele was detect-ed by utrasonography before herniorrhaphy but sonographic findings of varicocele disappeared on the 6th month postoperatively. Ten pa-tients with normal preoperative ultrasound findings had stage 1 or 2 varicocele (n=4) and minimal hydrocele (n=6) on the 6th month postop-eratively. However preoperative and postoperative ultrasound findings had showed no statistically significant difference in terms of scrotal pathology (p=0.092). We believe that Lichtenstein herniorrhaphy is the ideal method for inguinal hernia repair with low complication rate and not a risk factor for varicocele, spermatocele and hydrocele.
