The Needlestick and Sharp Injuries Among Emergency Service Workers and Analysis of Prevention Methods
Abstract
Emergency Service(ES) staff face the risk of infectious diseases as a result of the needle stick and sharp injuries. In this study, we aimed to make an analysis of this injuries which the staff of ES in our province are exposed to and increase the preventive methods. The research was conducted by questionnaire method. Emergency Medicine Expert, Emergency Medicine Research Assistant, General Practitioner, Nurse- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Paramedic, Emergency Personnel, Cleaning Personnel who were working in hospitals of Bursa were included as study groups. Needle stick and sharp tools were described as syringe needle, suture needle, ampoule, vial, lancet and the others. Through the prepared questionnaire, detailed inquiry were conducted and finally the recommendations were taken. A total of 326 participants (183 female and 143 male) attended in the study and there was no difference between the hospitals according to gender distribution (p> 0.05). It was seen that the most injured group was Nurse-EMT-Paramedic (58.1%) and the most common cause of injury was the injector needle. Also it was observed that injuries happened mostly on weekdays and morning hours. The frequency of this injuries for health workers is high especially in ES, which may be related to difficult working conditions.
