Large Vestibular Aquaduct Syndrome: Two Case Report

Abstract

The incidence of “Large Vestibular Aquaduct Syndrome (LVAS)” covers the 1,5% of sensorineural hearing losses (SNHL) in children and adolescent age group. In this patients the usual character of SNHL is being bilateral, progressive and dominating in high frequencies; but sometimes it may be unilateral and may fluctuate. Recently, it has been accepted that the etiology of LVAS is complex. The etiology of hearing loss remains still unclear; but it is known that hearing loss can be aggravated by minor head traumas. Cochlear implantation can be considered in cases of unsuccessful treatment with steroids and hyperbaric oxygen. In our clinic the LVAS was diagnosed in two female patients (seven and twenty years old) who were hospitalized because of sudden hearing loss. In this article, the clinical and radiological findings of these two patients are described and discussed.

Geniş Vestibüler Akuaduktus Sendromu: 2 Olgu Sunumu

Abstract

Çocuk ve adolesan yaş grubunda nörosensoriyal işitme kaybının (NSİK) % 1,5'u “Geniş Vestibüler Akuaduktus Sendrom (GVAS)”lu hastalardır. Bu hastalarda NSİK sıklıkla yüksek frekanslarda, bilateral ve progresif tarzda olup, bazen ünilateral ve flüktüan şekilde de olabilir. Son yıllarda GVAS'nin oluşmasında kompleks etiyolojinin rol aldığı anlaşılmıştır. GVAS'da işitme kaybının nedeni açık olmamasına rağmen, minor baş travmaları ile arttığı bilinmektedir. Tedavide steroid, hiperbarik oksijen gibi ajanlarla tedavi sonrası başarısızlık durumunda koklear implant uygulaması söz konusudur. Kliniğimizde iki yıl önce ani NSİK nedeni ile yatırdığımız yedi ve yirmi yaşlarında iki bayan hastamıza yapılan tetkikleri sonucunda GVAS tanısı konulmuştur. Bu makalede, olgularımızın klinik ve radyolojik bulguları literatür verileri ışığında sunulmuştur.
