A One-Secondary Hospital Experience with Percutaneous Renal Biopsy

Abstract

Renal biopsy is performed for the diagnosis and the decision of treatment of renal parenchymal diseases. The aim of this study was to evalu-ate the clinicopathological findings of kidney biopsies. A retrospective review of reports of 30 native renal biopsies performed on patients at the secondary nephrology unit in Bursa from 2005 to 2010 was undertaken. The most common indication for biopsy of native kidneys was proteinuria (40%). This was followed by proteinuria and hematuria (33.3%). The most frequent pathological diagnosis was membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN) (30%), followed by IgA nephropathy (IgAN) (16.7%), amyloidosis (16.7%), membranoproliferative glomerulo-nephritis (10%), lupus nephritis (10%), tubulointerstitial nephropathies (6%), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (3.3%), hypertensive nephrosclerosis (3.3%) and vasculitis (3.3%). There was no major complications. Proteinuria was the most common indication for kidney biopsy and MGN was the most frequent diagnosis, followed closely by IgAN and amyloidosis. The present study has showed that secondary hospital's nephrology units can be effective if appropriate conditions are met.
