Abstract
Lesbos island which was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1462, due to its strategic significance and fertile soil, was of special interest to the state. Owing to this and its close proximity with the capital city, it gradually became main supplier of food products for both palace and Istanbul.
All he reasons listed above resulted in the formation of an opinion that the island is an excellent investment opportunity hence numerous vaqf emerged there including those of high ranking state officers and Ottoman dynasty members. One of the ruling dynasty family member to establish a vaqf on Lesbos was Mihrishah Valide Sultan. This work targets at providing information on the activitities of Mihrishah Valide Sultan’s vaqf olive groves on the island in the 19th century, and by its example, illustrating the socio-economic situation on Lesbos.

1462 tarihinde Osmanlı Devleti tarafından fethedilen Midilli, stratejik önemi ve verimli toprakları sayesinde devletin özel ilgisine sahip olmuştur. Hem bu durum hem de başkente olan yakınlığı, adayı İstanbul ve saray için bir gıda tedarikçisi haline getirmiştir.
Bahsedilen bu durumlar nedeniyle Midilli adası devlet adamları ve hanedan üyeleri açısından iyi bir yatırım alanı olarak görülmüş, adada normal vakıflar yanında çok miktarda yüksek dereceli memur ve hanedan üyelerine ait vakıflar kurulmuştur. Midilli’de vakıf kuran hanedan mensuplarından birisi de Mihrişah Valide Sultan’dır. Bu çalışmada, hem adadaki zeytincilik ve zeytinyağı üretimi konusunda, hem de Mihrişah Valide Sultan vakıf zeytinlikleri özelinde adada XIX. yüzyıl ortalarında görülen sosyo-ekonomik yapı hakkında bilgi verilmeye çalışılmıştır.

The articles sent to the Journal of Waqfs with a request for publication are subject to preliminary examination by the Editorial Board and at least two academicians who are experts in their fields are sent for review. The copyright of the articles accepted to be published in the Journal of Waqfs with the referee reports and the decision of the Editorial Board is deemed to have been transferred to the General Directorate of Foundations, and a royalty fee is paid to the published articles in accordance with the relevant legislation.
