Bu çalışmada Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü Arşivinde Hurufat Defterleri kataloğunda bulunan Ahıska kazası kayıtları örneklem olarak alınmak suretiyle kazanın toplumsal tarihine ilişkin bir kesit sunulmak istenmiştir. Seçilen defter serisi XVI. yüzyıl sonlarında Osmanlı idaresine giren ve XIX. yüzyıl başlarında Osmanlı idaresinden çıkan Ahıska bölgesine ait olması hasebiyle bölgenin Türkleşme ve İslamlaşma süreçlerini aydınlatması bakımından önem arz etmektedir.
Ahıska kazasına ait 23 defter üzerinden bölgenin 1690 ile 1834 yıllarına ait vakıf teşkilatının işleyişini çeşitli cami, mescid ve medrese gibi üniteler üzerinden inceleme fırsatı hâsıl olmuştur. Özelikle bu vakıf kurumlarında görevli olan personelin isimleri, atanma usulleri, kazançları, görev süreleri vb. kriterler üzerinden Ahıska bölgesinin toplumsal tarihine ilişkin tespitler yapılmıştır.
