Individual Social Responsibility and Religious Attitude: Is Religion a Determining Factor in Individual and Social Responsibilities?

Abstract

People live within social environments, cultures, and religious frameworks that shape their responsibilities. Religion plays a vital role in shaping their lives, fostering qualities such as helpfulness, thoughtfulness, humility, and altruism. It also emphasizes individual and social responsibilities. Religious doctrines impose moral and religious duties on followers, including obligations to respect society and its institutions. This study examined the links between personal social responsibility and religious attitudes among students in Theology Faculties in Türkiye. The sample included 391 students from Istanbul University and Kilis 7 Aralık University. I measured individual social responsibility using the “Individual Social Responsibility Scale” developed by Eraslan. I also measured religious attitude using the “Ok Religious Attitude Scale.” Based on the study findings, first, individual social responsibility was positively correlated with religious attitude. Second, religious attitude was a strong positive predictor of individual social responsibility. Third, the positive association between individual social responsibility and religious attitudes was stronger among females than among males. Lastly, the positive association between individual social responsibility and religious attitude was stronger among participants from urban areas than among those from rural areas. This research emphasizes that religion can serve as a reference point for personal social responsibility and human empathy. I discussed the study's results, implications, and potential directions for future research in detail.
