Abstract

Impacts of Environmental Regulations and Economic Growth on Air Pollution in Türkiye: An Empirical Study

Abstract

Purpose: In this study, the impact of the economic growth and the environmental regulations on air pollution were investigated in Turkish economy on the basis of the years 1990-2015.

Methodology: In the study the stationarity test for the variables was performed using the ADF unit root test without structural break. The unit root test outcomes showed that the ARDL bounds test was appropriate in determining the long-term relationship between the variables. Finally, Frequency domain causality test were used to investigate the causality relationship between variables.

Findings: Boundary test findings revealed a long-term relationship between the variables. Long-term results have shown that economic growth has a positive effect on air pollution, whereas the number of patents related to environmental technologies has a negative effect on air pollution. According to the causality test findings, bidirectional causality was found between air pollution and environmental regulations in the short-term and mid-term. The environmental regulations have a significant impact on reducing air pollution in the short and mid-term.

Originality: There is no other paper in the literature that analyzes the effects of environmental regulations on air pollution in Türkiye. Therefore, this is the first paper to analyze the impact of environmental regulations on air pollution for the Turkish economy. In addition, the effect of environmental technologies on air pollution was also investigated.
