Circular Economy as An Opportunity for Productivity: Inertia Barrier to the Transition Towards the Circular Model

Year 2023, CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND SUSTAINABILITY, 219 - 236, 05.01.2023

Abstract

Purpose: A circular economy (CE) creates significant productivity opportunities for companies, and organizational inertia creates obstacles in organization to the transition toward the CE. The aim is the determine the priority order of the dimensions of the concept of organizational inertia and which dimension creates more resistance to change.

Methodology: The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used. The data were collected with the help of the managers/leaders (experts) who have at least ten years of experience in 10 companies. Five companies are not yet adopted the CE, and five are about to transition to the CE.

Findings: It has been determined that the most critical inertia dimension in the transition to CE is psychological inertia (0.45). In the Insight inertia, 'not trying to observe and learn new concepts to change' (0,33); In the action inertia, 'not accepting suggestions to change the way of solving problems' (0.33); In the psychological inertia, "employees feel threatened by any organizational changes." (0,40). 'Employees like the current processes and do not like change.' (0,15) took the first row in the general ranking.

Originality: The findings are expected to provide theoretical and empirical information about organizational inertia. Essentials clues will be provided to develop general sustainability agendas and create holistic strategies and solutions.

Verimlilik Fırsatı Olarak Döngüsel Ekonomi: Döngüsel Modele Geçişte Atalet Engeli

Year 2023, CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND SUSTAINABILITY, 219 - 236, 05.01.2023
https://doi.org/10.51551/verimlilik.1105119
