Abstract

Sustainable Aviation: The Role of Psychological Meaningfulness on Pro-Environmental Behavior

Year 2025, Volume: 16 Issue: 47, 940 - 958, 31.08.2025

Abstract

Environmental sustainability is a subject of study for academic research as well as for modern businesses in understanding how to encourage pro-environmental behavior of individuals and predicting the factors that influence such behavior. Aviation is one of the modern and dynamic sectors where environmental policies are effectively implemented and employees' awareness and knowledge of environmental issues are continuously improved. Within the framework of this dynamism, it is very important for employees to attribute value and meaning at both individual and organizational levels in terms of sustainability. However, studies on the psychological meaningfulness experiences of employees in the fundamental role of pro-environmental behaviors in guiding sustainability are limited, and new studies to be conducted in the sample of the aviation sector are considered to have an important role in achieving the 2050 net zero carbon target. From this point of view, the aim of the study is to reveal the effect of psychological meaningfulness on the pro-environmental behavior of employees. In line with this purpose, quantitative analyses of the data collected from 208 employees through questionnaire technique using psychological meaningfulness and task-related pro-environmental behavior scales are conducted and the hypotheses of the research are tested. As a result of the related analyses, it is found that psychological meaningfulness has a significant effect on the explanation of task-related employee green behavior, as well as a significant difference between psychological meaningfulness and the educational status of aviation sector employees. With this result, it is thought that the study would contribute to the literature and the aviation sector and would form a basis for future research.
