Heidegger and Nietzsche on ‘thinking in values’

Abstract

Heidegger condems 'thinking in values' as 'the greatest blasphemy imaginable against Being,' and, on that basis, critizes Nietzsche's proposed projects of creating new values and construncting a new morality. In this paper I will attempt to show that Heidegger's criticism is misguided. I will attempt to demonstrate, specifically, that Heidegger's objection is undermined by his own conception of philosophy, and, more importantly, that it is itself a specimen of 'thinking in values' - the very thing which he so much despises when he discovers it in Nietzsche. In other words, I will try to show that Heidegger's criticism of any and all evaluative messages is itself an evaluative message. However, o the positive side, I will also argue that Heidegger's message, when taken frankly as an evaluative one, is both important and, though he would hate to admit it, valuable. But this message is not inconsistent with Nietszche's position; rather, I will try to show that the two positions are complementary.

Heidegger ve Nietzsche’de Değerlere Göre Düşünme

Abstract

Heidegger değerlere göre düşünmeyi Varlık’a karşı edilen en büyük hakaret olarak nitelendirir ve bu bağlamda Nietzsche’nin önerdiği yeni değerler yaratmak ve yeni bir ahlâk anlayışı inşa etme konusundaki projelerini eleştirir. Bu makalede Heidegger’in bu eleştirisinin yanlış olduğunu göstermeye çalışacağım. Burada göstermek istediğim şey Heidegger’in itirazının felsefi kavrayışına dayandığı ve daha da önemlisi Nietzsche’de küçümsemesine neden olan şeyin kendisinin de “değerlere göre düşünmeye” bir örnek teşkil ettiğidir. Diğer bir deyişle Heidegger’in eleştirisinin ve tüm değer atfeden mesajlarının kendilerinin de değer atfeden mesajlar olduğunu göstermeye çalışacağım. Tüm bunların yanı sıra olumlu yönden bakıldığında Heidegger’in mesajının özenle incelendiğinde önemli olduğunu ve kendisini her ne kadar bundan hoşlanmasa da değerli olduğunu tartışacağım. Fakat bu mesajın Nietzsche’nin tutumuyla çelişmediğini tersine iki durumun birbirini tamamladığını göstermeye çalışacağım.
