Rethinking the Body in Interactive Art Practices: A Phenomenological Approach to Human-Machine Interaction

Year 2025, Issue: 34, 153 - 169, 30.07.2025
https://doi.org/10.17484/yedi.1649104

Abstract

In this study, the body in interactive art practice will be addressed in a phenomenological context, and human-machine interaction will be examined through the lens of the concept of embodiment. In particular, drawing on system-oriented perspectives and experience-oriented perspectives that theoretically address interactive art practices, the way sensors capture the body and the participant's experience and performance will be discussed. The study will investigate how installations incorporating embedded technological sensor technologies affect interaction and relationality. Based on this, it can be questioned whether the limited structure, capabilities and potential of the body will be expanded through interactive works within the scope of this study. In addition, it also considers the possibility of evaluating human-machine interaction of experiential art within the framework of the concept of embodiment. The study uses the phenomenological method as its research design. The aim of the study is to expand the scope by looking at interactive art practices from an experience-oriented perspective. The study addresses the question of what the thing that determines the boundaries of the body is and how it is made possible. In the study, by considering machine-focused theoretical perspectives and experience-focused approaches, it is concluded that invisible (embedded) sensor technologies have the potential to expand the experiential body and its limitations.

Etkileşimli Sanat Pratiklerinde Bedeni Yeniden Düşünmek: İnsan-Makine Etkileşimi Üzerine Fenomenolojik Bir Yaklaşım

Year 2025, Issue: 34, 153 - 169, 30.07.2025
https://doi.org/10.17484/yedi.1649104
