Power of Social Media: London Riots

Abstract

Internet media’s development is a turning point for social movements because possibilities like easier commincation and reaching to masses made Internet inevitable for being used to be organised. In the riots taken place in England, in 2011, the people who started the riots used the BlackBerry Messenger which is a chat program on mobile phones while the groups who are opposed to riots used Twitter named social media tools actively. In this paper, social movement context, London riots and the usage of social media during riots were analysed using qualitative anaylsis way. Results show that social media played an active role in growth and spread of London Riots.

Sosyal Medyanın Gücü: Londra İsyanları

Abstract

Toplumsal hareketler açısından internet medyasının gelişimi bir dönüm noktası olmuştur; çünkü daha kolay iletişim kurma ve kitlelere hitap edebilme özelliği, internetin örgütlenme için kullanılmasını vazgeçilmez kılmıştır. 2011 yılında İngiltere’de meydana gelen isyanlarda, isyanı oluşturan insanlar bir sohbet programı olan BlackBerry Messenger’ı; isyana karşı gelen gruplar ise Twitter ismi verilen sosyal medya araçlarını etkin bir biçimde kullanmışlardır. Bu makalede toplumsal hareket kavramı, Londra İsyanları ve isyandaki sosyal medya kullanımı nitel analiz yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Bu analiz sonucunda Londra İsyanları’nın büyümesinde ve gelişmesinde sosyal medya kullanımının aktif rol oynadığı gözlemlenmiştir.
