Whose Space? Differences Among Users and Non-Users of Social Network Sites

Abstract

Sosyal ağ sitelerini kullananlar ve aşina olmalarına rağmen onlardan uzak duranlar arasında sistematik farklılıklar var mıdır? Çeşitli özelliklere sahip genç yetişkinlere uygulanan bir anketten elde edilen verilere dayanan bu makale, özel olarak Facebook, MysPace, Xanga ve Friendster’e odaklanarak SAS kullanımının belirleyicilerini incelemektedir. Bulgular, bu tür sitelerin kullanımının, yüksek düzeyde bağlantıya sahip kullanıcılardan oluşan bir grup arasında rastgele dağı(tı)lmadığını göstermektedir. Bir kişinin cinsiyeti, ırkı, etnik kökeni ve ebeveynlerinin eğitim geçmininin tamamı kullanımla ilişkilidir, ancak bu durum; çoğu kez toplu olarak ele alınan sosyal ağ sitelerinin yalnızca servislere göre ayrıştırılmasıyla geçerlidir. Ayrıca, daha fazla deneyim ve kullanım özerkliğine sahip kişilerin bu tür sitelerin kullanıcısı olma olasılığı daha yüksektir. Kullanıcının arka planına bağlı eşit olmayan katılımı, bu tür servislerin farklı şekilde benimsenmesinin dijital eşitsizliğe katkı sağlayabileceğini göstermektedir.

Çeşitli özelliklere sahip genç yetişkinlere uygulanan bir anketten elde edilen verilere dayanan bu makale, özel olarak Facebook, MysPace, Xanga ve Friendster’e odaklanarak SAS kullanımının belirleyicilerini incelemektedir. Bulgular, bu tür sitelerin kullanımının, yüksek düzeyde bağlantıya sahip kullanıcılardan oluşan bir grup arasında rastgele dağı(tı)lmadığını göstermektedir. Bir kişinin cinsiyeti, ırkı, etnik kökeni ve ebeveynlerinin eğitim geçmininin tamamı kullanımla ilişkilidir, ancak bu durum; çoğu kez toplu olarak ele alınan sosyal ağ sitelerinin yalnızca servislere göre ayrıştırılmasıyla geçerlidir.
