The relationship between perceived overqualification and organizational ostracism in academicians

Abstract

In this quantitative study, the relationship between perceived overqualification and perceptions of organizational ostracism of academics working at a state university was examined. The universe of the research consists of 1772 academic staff members working at a state university. The sample of the study consists of 316 academic staff selected by disproportionate element sampling. Data were collected with the Perceived Overqualification Scale and the Organizational Ostracism Scale. The data were analyzed with both parametric and nonparametric statistical tests. According to the findings of the study, while the perceived overqualification perceptions of academicians were at a moderate level, their perceptions of organizational ostracism were at a high level. While there was no significant difference between the perceptions of overqualified academics according to gender, age, affiliated institution, professional seniority, educational status and title, it was concluded that the perceived overqualification perceptions of the academicians decreased as the length of service in the institution they worked in increased. On the other hand, no significant difference was found between the variables of gender, age, affiliated institution, professional seniority, educational status, length of service in the institution they work in, and title and organizational ostracism perceptions of academicians. As a result of the correlation analysis, it was determined that there was a moderate positive relationship between the perceived overqualification of academicians and their perceptions of organizational ostracism. According to the results of the regression analysis, perceived overqualification and organizational ostracism predicted each other by 20.4%.
