Abstract

Abstract

The emotional mediation hypothesis argues that when people make matches between music and color, colors that match the emotional associations of the music are chosen. In this study, it was aimed to test the emotional mediation hypothesis by determining the music-color and music-emotional associations related to piano compositions of classical music. The study was carried out on 151 students studying in different departments of Ordu University Faculty of Education. The post-test single-group pre-experimental design was used in the study. In the experimental procedure, the piano compositions of Mozart (major/fast), Beethoven (minor/fast) and Chopin (minor/slow) were listened to. Participants matched the compositions with the three most consistent colors and the three most consistent modes. A color chart consisting of 37 colors was presented for the participants to choose the colors. There are 6 modes for emotions: happy/sad, peaceful/tense, strong/weak. Descriptive statistical methods were used in the analysis of the data. The obtained data support the emotional mediation hypothesis. The colors and moods chosen by the participants show different distributions according to the tone and speed of the music listened to. In addition, the results show that the distribution of music-color and music-emotional associations is similar to the studies in the literature.
