BEYOND THE TIME AND SPACE: TURKISH FOLK MUSIC IN THE CONTEXT OF GIDDENS' THEORY OF MODERNITY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Modernism, which started in 17th century Europe and later influenced other societies, led to the dissolution of traditional cultural forms and radical transformations in the field of culture, as seen in all areas of social life. The effects of modernism, which triggered relatively radical social changes in the Ottoman and Republican eras, on Turkish music is one of the topics that academic Turkish music research has focused on. Turkish folk music, which can be traced back to German Romanticism in terms of its institutionalization, is one of the results of the modern transformations in the Republican Era in the cultural sphere. In other words, Turkish folk music, which was institutionalized as a result of the intellectual orientation of the period and the compilation and collection of folk culture elements deemed valuable in the creation of national identity, can be considered as a modern music genre in terms of its structure. Drawing on Giddens' theoretical framework in relation to modernity, this article discusses the decontextualization of local practices utilized in the construction of Turkish folk music by modernist principles and their re-contextualization within a national unity on the basis of nationalism. The study was carried out within the scope of the information obtained through a literature review and as a result, the differences of Turkish folk music from local music practices in terms of qualities such as performance style, orchestral order, choral practices, audience, performance venue, and standardization in sound organization were revealed.
