CONTENT ANALYSIS OF GRADUATE ENTRANCE EXAM CRITERIA IN THE CONTEXT OF MUSİC EDUCATİON DEPARTMENTS

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to examine the admission criteria for graduate music education programs. The research is designed based on qualitative research methods. In the study, the admission criteria for graduate music education programs at universities were analyzed using the document analysis method. The study group of the research consists of the graduate entrance exam announcement texts of 22 universities offering graduate music education in Turkey. Data related to the exam announcements were collected from the official websites of the universities between June and September 2022. The research findings indicate that in master's and doctoral music education exams, universities generally emphasize topics such as harmonic analysis, musical forms, and educational approaches, while scientific research methods, Turkish Folk Music, and Turkish Art Music are less frequently included. While instrumental/vocal performance is expected in all universities, portfolio, solfège, and scientific interviews are less commonly applied. For in-field candidates, having a sufficient level of proficiency in their instrument is important, while out-of-field candidates are also required to prepare with an awareness of this performance expectation. Additionally, it can be stated that some universities not publishing their exam announcement content makes it difficult for students to access information.
