NOTES ARE UNIVERSAL, POINTS ARE POLITICAL: A SNAPSHOT OF THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST'S REFLECTIONS IN THE DIGITAL WORLD

Abstract

This study examines how Azerbaijan's decision to award Israel 12 points in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest was received in new media environments in Türkiye. The data source for the study is user comments posted on Ekşi Sözlük, one of Türkiye’s most popular online discussion platforms. Both quantitative content analysis and qualitative thematic analysis were employed in the study. Quantitative content analysis was used to determine the frequency distribution of user reactions, while qualitative thematic analysis was conducted in accordance with the process proposed by Braun and Clarke to develop themes. The research findings reveal that the authors did not view this vote as merely a musical preference, but rather evaluated it within the framework of nationalism, international interests, and political crises. In the comments, the brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Türkiye through nationalism, Israel's policies toward Gaza, the neutrality of Eurovision, and the relations between Azerbaijan and Israel were frequently discussed through and by means of music. The study is considered to contribute to the literature in the context of revealing social reactions in the digital sphere through the competitive culture inherent in musical events. From this perspective, it is possible to say that music is not merely an aesthetic form of expression but a multi-layered means of communication and representation.

NOTALAR EVRENSEL, PUANLAR SİYASAL: EUROVISION ŞARKI YARIŞMASININ DİJİTAL DÜNYADA YANSIMALARI ÜZERİNE BİR KESİT

Abstract

Bu çalışma, 2025 Eurovision Şarkı Yarışmasında Azerbaycan’ın İsrail’e 12 puan vermesinin Türkiye’de yeni medya ortamlarında nasıl karşılandığını incelemektedir. Araştırmanın veri kaynağı, Türkiye’nin en popüler çevrimiçi tartışma platformlarından birisi olan Ekşi Sözlük’te yer alan kullanıcı yorumlarıdır. Çalışmada hem nicel içerik analizi hem de nitel tematik analiz bir arada kullanılmıştır. Nicel içerik analizi ile kullanıcı tepkilerinin frekans dağılımı belirlenirken; nitel tematik analizde Braun ve Clarke’ın önerdiği süreç doğrultusunda temalar geliştirilmiştir. Araştırma bulguları yazarların bu oylamayı sadece müzikal bir tercih olarak görmediği, aksine milliyetçilik, uluslararası çıkarlar ve politik krizler çerçevesinde değerlendirmişlerdir. Yorumlarda; milliyetçilik yoluyla Azerbaycan-Türkiye kardeşliği, İsrail’in Gazze politikaları, Eurovision’un tarafsızlığı, Azerbaycan-İsrail ilişkileri müzik yoluyla ve aracılığıyla sıkça tartışılmıştır. Çalışma, müzikal etkinliklerin içerisinde barındırdığı yarışmacı kültürün dijital alanda toplumsal tepkileri görünür kılması bağlamında literatüre katkı sunmaktadır. Bu açıdan, müziğin sadece estetik bir ifade biçimi olmadığını, çok katmanlı bir iletişim ve temsil aracı olduğunu söylememiz mümkündür.
