THE LITERATURE OF AN AGE THROUGH THE EYES OF ASAF HÂLET ÇELEBI

Abstract

Asaf Halet Çelebi found a special place with his mystical, tale-like and dreamy poems which depend on the subconscious and the existential matters among the young generation of 1940’s that were in favour with “new style poetry”. The poet who generally became a mockery subject because of his life style, personality, and his works in that time, owes his fame, in a sense, to these ironic evaluations. But, when Asaf Halet’s poems are carefully examined, it can be seen that there is a wide cultural universe behind his poetry whose borders extend from Islamic and Indian mysticism to prehistoric civilizations. Asaf Halet’s articles and conversations on literature published in various newspapers and periodicals of that time show us that he was not only a good poet but also a prolific intellectual who participated in the 1940’s and 50’s literary debates and produced effective ideas on Turkish poetry in terms of poetic structure and themes. In the debates on the necessity of rhythm and rhyme in poem, he defended similar arguments with the Garip Movement; but he rejected ideological poetry unlike social realist poets.

ASAF HÂLET ÇELEBİ’NİN GÖZÜNDEN BİR DEVRİN EDEBİYATI

Abstract

Asaf Hâlet Çelebi, bilinçaltı ve varolus sorunlarına dayalı, mistik, masalsı ve düşsel şiirleriyle, 1940’lı yılların yeni tarz şiir taraftarı genç kuşağı arasında özel bir yer edinmistir. Yaşayısı, kişiliği ve eserleriyle döneminde genellikle alay konusu olan şair, kazandığı ünü bir bakıma bu alaycı değerlendirmelere borçludur. Ancak Asaf Hâlet’in şiirleri dikkatle incelendiğinde, bu şiirlerin arkasında, sınırları İslam tasavvufu ve Hint mistisizminden tarih öncesi uygarlıklara kadar uzanan geniş bir kültür evreni görülebilir. Asaf Hâlet’in, dönemin çeşitli gazete ve dergilerinde yayımlanan edebiyatla ilişkili yazı ve konuşmaları bize onun sadece iyi bir şair değil, aynı zamanda, 1940’lı-50’li yılların edebî tartışmalarına katılmış, şiirin yapısı ve temaları bağlamında, Türk şiirine dair etkili görüşler üreten verimli bir aydın olduğunu göstermektedir. Şiirde vezin ve kafiyenin gerekliliği tartışmasında Garip Hareketiyle benzer düşünceleri savunmuş; ancak toplumcu-gerçekçi şairlerin aksine, ideolojik şiir anlayışını reddetmiştir.
