ROMANTIC NATURE PERCEPTION IN THE NOVELS OF NAMIK KEMAL
Öz
Romanticism is an emphasis on the continuous nature of mankind since its
existence, rather than a movement in fact, it is a way of perceiving certain
beings, subjects and situations. Just like many movements, romanticism has
turned into a strong emphasis since the 1800s, become as an –izm. The movement
developed individually and socially as well, has developed in France and
pervaded in Europe and Turkish literature in a short time and influenced many
artists. One of the strongest paths of individual romanticism is nature;
besides its being a space that enables the living beings to live by its
changing, developing, transforming feature; with the mysterious and impressive
temperament, takes place in philosophy, science and various branches of art for
ages.
Tanzimat (Reform) romantics, takes the nature as an
existence which is vivid, remedial and a reflection of God. Namık Kemal, who is
an important name of Turkish literature in Tanzimat period and also a strong
representative of the movement, has approached the nature with romantic
perception as well. By focusing on the relationship between human and nature,
he expresses the nature in his works as alive, dynamic, and in motion. At his
first novel İntibah, with his perception comes from tradition, sees the
nature wontedly but with the long description of spaces he makes, adumbrates
that he tries to add a new lease to the literature. At this second novel Cezmi,
set the descriptions in motion and narrates with linking to the physiology of
the persons and brings them far from being a décor, places them into the novel.
In this study, it is endeavored to reveal the romantic perception by referring
to the way how the artist approached the nature and how he placed it in his
novels.
