Abstract

Abstract

José Ortega y Gasset was a philosopher, journalist, writer and academic who lived between 1883 and 1955. The author, who was born in Madrid, passed away in Madrid; however, he spent his life in countries such as Germany, France, Portugal and Argentina (some of which were in exile for political reasons). In addition to being considered the most important philosopher of his country, Spain, with the writings of over 6000 pages he left behind, the ideas he put forward in the context of humanities, and his philosophical approach, he had a deep impact especially on European and Latin American philosophy. The fact that many of his works have been translated into Turkish by various publishing houses indicates that the author has a considerable readership in our country. One of the features that make the book that is the subject of this article important is that, in addition to the close relationship he established with the university institution due to the fact that he received his doctorate degree and served as a faculty member, Gasset also scrutinized the university in the context of his strong belief that bringing his country to prosperity is through social and cultural change achieved through education. Based on this, I am trying to examine this work in detail in the current article, which I read with the motivation of understanding the author's ideas about the university institution and its position in social life.
