The Impact of Social Media Activism on Offline Activism and the Role of Demographic Factors

Abstract

Social media has become a powerful tool that interacts with the offline dimensions of activism, and the impact of these interactions on the dynamics of social change has been increasingly significant. In particular, recent events related to animal rights in Turkey have provided a foundation for campaigns initiated on social media to evolve into offline protests and demonstrations, contributing to heightened public awareness during this process. The primary aim of this study is to examine the effects of social media activism on offline activism within the context of the Animal Protection Law. Additionally, determining whether participation in social media and offline activism differs according to demographic factors constitutes another objective of the research. This study, which employs a quantitative research design, identifies individuals aged 18 and above residing in Turkey as the target population. Data were collected from 401 participants through convenience sampling and the use of an online survey. Regression analysis, independent samples t-test, and One-Way ANOVA were applied to analyze the data. The findings of the study indicate that social media activism has a positive influence on offline activism. Furthermore, it was found that demographic characteristics such as gender, age, marital status, monthly household income, and political views lead to variations in the levels of participation in both social media and offline activism. Based on these findings, recommendations were provided to public relations practitioners, academics, and activists, and the role of social media activism in driving social change was emphasized.

Sosyal Medya Aktivizminin Çevrimdışı Aktivizme Etkisi ve Demografik Faktörlerin Rolü

Abstract

Sosyal medya, günümüzde aktivizmin çevrimdışı yönüyle etkileşim içinde olan güçlü bir araç haline gelmiş, bu etkileşimlerin toplumsal değişim dinamikleri üzerindeki etkisi giderek artmıştır. Özellikle son dönemlerde Türkiye'de hayvan haklarıyla ilgili yaşanan olaylar, sosyal medya üzerinden gerçekleştirilen kampanyaların çevrimdışı protesto ve eylemlere dönüşmesine zemin hazırlamış, bu süreçte toplumsal duyarlılığın artmasına katkı sağlamıştır. Bu kapsamda hazırlanan çalışmanın temel amacı, sosyal medya aktivizminin çevrimdışı aktivizme olan etkilerini Hayvanları Koruma Kanunu bağlamında incelemektir. Ayrıca, demografik faktörlere göre sosyal medya aktivizmine ve çevrimdışı aktivizme katılımın farklılık gösterip göstermediğinin belirlenmesi araştırmanın bir diğer amacını oluşturmaktadır. Nicel araştırma desenine sahip bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de ikamet eden 18 yaş ve üzeri bireyler, araştırma evreni olarak tanımlanmıştır. Veriler, kolayda örnekleme yöntemiyle ve çevrimiçi anket tekniği kullanılarak 401 katılımcıdan elde edilmiştir. Verilerin analizi için regresyon analizi, bağımsız gruplar t-testi ve One Way ANOVA uygulanmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, sosyal medya aktivizminin çevrimdışı aktivizmi olumlu yönde etkilediğini ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca, katılımcıların cinsiyet, yaş, medeni durum, aylık hane halkı geliri ve siyasi görüş gibi demografik özelliklerinin sosyal medya aktivizmi ve çevrimdışı aktivizme katılım düzeyinde farklılıklar oluşturduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu bulgular ışığında, halkla ilişkiler uygulayıcılarına, akademisyenlere, aktivistlere öneriler sunulmuş ve sosyal medya aktivizminin toplumsal değişim üzerindeki rolü vurgulanmıştır.
