Estimation of Variance Components and Genetic Parameters for The Various Body Measurements in Turkish Arabian Horse

Abstract

The aim of the study, is to estimate the variance components and the genetic parameters for various body measurements in Turkish Arab horse. For this purpose, body measurements of 912 Arab horses born in Turkey between 2008-2014 were evaluated. Data were analyzed with variance analysis in SPSS in the GLM procedure to determine the effects of fixed factors. Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated with REML, whereas breeding values with BLUP animal model using MTDFREML software. The effects of herd, birth year, sex and age on all body measurements were found significant (P <0.01). Least squares means for withers height, heart girth circumference, and cannon bone circumference were found 150.64 cm, 172.32 cm and 19.01 cm, respectively. Maternal effects were included for the same traits in model 2 and the heritabilities were found 0.30, 0.47, 0.27 in univariate analysis; and 0.52, 0.47, 0.36 in the bivariate analysis. Maternal heritabilities were found as 0.14, 0.12, 0.0 for withers height, cannon bone circumference, heart girth circumference. Direct maternal genetic correlations for withers height, heart girth circumference, cannon bone circumference were calculated as -0.15, -0.99 and -0.47, respectively. The genetic correlations between the traits ranged from 0.68 to 0.71. According to the results of the present study; It can be said that a satisfactory genetic progression can be achieved with selection when considering the expected moderate to high level of heritability and high genetic correlation between traits, even though the genetic trend is stable for these traits.
