The effect of years since menopause on lipid and lipoprotein levels

Year 2005, Volume: 36 Issue: 1, 7 - 10, 01.02.2005

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effect of years since menopause, independent of age, on lipid and lipoprotein levels. Materials and Methods: Records of 80 post menopausal women, who were admitted to the Menopause Outpatient Clinic of the Marmara University Hospital between January - October 2003, were retrospectively analyzed. The participants were first divided into two groups according to their age; younger group consisted of those, who were between 41 and 51 years of age (n=36), and older group consisted of those, who were $\geq$ 52 years of age (n=44). Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups according to their duration of menopause; women with duration of menopause below the 50th percentile were included in the group of women with short duration of menopause, and those with that above the 50th percentile were included in the group of women with long duration of menopause. Lipid and lipoprotein levels and HDL-cholesterol/LDL-cholesterol ratios of women with short duration of menopause (n=40) were compared with those with long duration of menopause (n=40) by using the Student's t test. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels and HDL-cholesteroll LDL-cholesterol ratios between women with short duration of menopause and those with long duration of menopause, independent of age. Conclusion: There is no relationship between the duration of menopause and serum lipid and lipoprotein levels, independent of age.

Postomenopozal sürenin lipid ve lipoprotein seviyeleri üzerindeki etkisi

Year 2005, Volume: 36 Issue: 1, 7 - 10, 01.02.2005
