Perceived spousal support among women in early postpartum period

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to determine perceived spousal support among women in the early postpartum period. Material and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a perinatology ward in a university hospital in Istanbul University. Ethics committee approved the study. Informed consents of the patients were obtained. The convenience sample of the study was consisted of 100 women who gave birth between January- June 2009. Women were interviewed by the researcher after birth. Data were gathered through interviews using an interview form that addressed the characteristics' of postpartum women and the "Perceived Spouse Support Form for women in early postpartum " which was prepared by the researchers. This form consists of 25 statements scored on a five point likert type scale ranging from absolutely yes-yes-undecided- no- absolutely no. Results: The mean age of the women was 29,64 ± 047( ± SS) (min-max). Most of women (64%) were housewife, 79% of women had nuclear family and 45% of women reported to have middle income. Participants that had a profile of urban-western women, were perceived support during pregnancy and early postpartum by their spouses. High rates of women were agree with positive expressions about support from their spouses. Half of women (56%) said their spouses wanted to be with them at birth. The most basic expectations of participants were to have healthy babies and to breast-feed effective enough. Conclusion: In order to support womens 'expectations, parental leave should be given to fathers, breastfeeding counselling and effective and appropriate discharge plan should be providedfor parents.

Erken loğusalık süresinde kadınların algıladıkları eş desteği

Abstract

Amaç: Çalışmanın amacı erken lohusalık sürecinde kadınların algıladıkları eş desteğinin ve belirlenmesidir. Gereç-Yöniem: Tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel yönteme göre planlanan çalışmanın evrenini; İstanbul'da bir Tıp Fakültesi Perinataloji Servisinde Ocak -Haziran 2009 tarihleri arasında doğum yapan tüm lohusalar oluşturmuştur. Etik kurul onayı alındıktan sonra çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden ve çalışmaya alınma kriterlerine uyan 100 kadın örnekleme alınmıştır. Bilgilendirilmiş onamdan sonra lohusalardan veriler, görüşme formu ve araştırmacılar tarafından literatür doğrultusunda 5 'li likert tarzında hazırlanan "Erken Lohusalık Sürecinde Kadınların Algıladıkları Eş Desteği Belirleme Formu" ile toplanmıştır. Form, kesinlikle evet/evet/karasızım/hayır/kesinlikle hayır şeklinde yanıtlanan 25 önermeden oluşmaktadır. Bulgular: Kadınların yaş ortalaması 29,64 ± 047( SS) (19-43 yaş) idi. Kadınların %64'ü herhangi bir işte çalışmıyordu. % 45 'i ekonomik durumunu "orta halli" olarak nitelendirdi. % 79'u çekirdek aile kompozisyonunda idi. Kentsel batılı kadın profiline sahip örneklemimizde, kadınların gebelik ve erken lohusalık döneminde, eşlerinden bir ölçüde destek algıladıkları belirlenmiştir. Lohusaların eş desteğine ilişkin olumlu ifadelere büyük oranlarda katıldığı, % 56 'sı eşlerinin doğumda yanında olmayı istediğini belirtti. Lohusalık dönemine ilişkin en temel beklenti ise sağlıklı bebek sahibi olma ve yeterince ve etkin emzirebilme idi. Sonuç: Kadınların bu beklentileri desteklemek için babaların da ebeveynlik izni kullanabilmesi, anneye emzirme desteği verilmesi, aileye etkin ve uygun bir taburculuk planı sunulması önerilebilir. Doğumhane koşullarının düzenlenerek eşlerin de doğuma katılmalarının desteklemesi olumlu doğum deneyimine katkı yapacaktır.
