Depression Level in Children with Migraine

Öz

Objective

Migraine is very common in primary childhood headaches. Depression and anxiety are reported in patients with migraine. This study is planned to determine the level of depression in children with migraine.

Material and Methods

This study was conducted on children with migraine who presented to the pediatric neurology clinic of Keçiören Training and Research Hospital in Ankara. Depression Scale for Children (CDI) was used to assess the level of depression.

Results

Fifty migraine and 40 control patients, with an age range of 6-17 years, were enrolled in this prospective study. No statistically significant difference was found between depression scores of the two groups. Migraine patients whose pain was in the frontal region were found to have depression

score ≥19 more frequently (p=0.019).

Discussion

Although biological and genetic factors mainly play a role in the pathogenesis of migraine, psychological factors should also be noted to be effective. Although a statistically significant difference between patients and controls was not detected, children with migraine should be monitored as a risk group in terms of development of depression. Neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies should be planned to investigate the effect of the frontal region in children with migraine and depression.

Migren Tanısı Alan Çocuklarda Depresyon Düzeyi

Giriş

Çocukluk çağı birincil baş ağrıları içinde migren çok sık görülmektedir. Migren tipi baş ağrısı olan hastalarda depresyon ve anksiyeteye rastlandığı bildirilmektedir. Bu çalışma migren tanısı alan çocuklarda depresyon düzeyini belirlemek amacıyla planlanmıştır.

Gereç ve Yöntem

Çalışmaya Keçiören Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Çocuk Nöroloji Polikliniğine baş ağrısı şikayeti ile başvuran ve migren tanısı alan hastalar alındı. Çocukların depresyon düzeyleri Çocuklar için Depresyon Ölçeği (ÇDÖ) kullanılarak değerlendirildi.

Bulgular

Çalışmaya 6-17 yaş aralığındaki toplam 50 hasta ve kontrol grubu olarak ise 40 hasta dahil edildi. İki grubun depresyon puanları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark saptanmadı. Migren grubunda frontal bölgede ağrısı olan hastalarda daha sık olarak depresyon puanının ≥19 olduğu saptandı (p=0.019).

Tartışma

Migrenin etyopatogenezinde esas olarak biyolojik ve genetik faktörler rol oynamasına rağmen psikolojik faktörlerin de etkili olabileceği unutulmamalıdır. Her ne kadar hasta ve kontrol grubu arasında istatistiksel anlamlı fark saptanmasa da migren tanısı alan çocukların depresyon varlığı ve gelişimi açısından risk grubu olarak izlenmesi yararlı olacaktır. Migren ve depresyon birlikteliği olan

çocuk hastalarda nörofizyolojik ve nöroradyolojik çalışmalar planlanarak frontal bölgenin etkisinin araştırılması uygun olabilir.
