Relationship of Vitamin B12 with depression-anxiety disorders: Retrospective cohort study
Abstract
Aim: In vitamin B12 deficiency, depression and anxiety disorders are reported to develop with regression in cognitive functions. Aim of our study is to investigate the relationship between these disorders and vitamin B12 deficiency.
Methods: Patients whose vitamin B12 levels were measured between 2011 and 2015 were searched through the hospital information system. Vitamin B12 levels were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The values <200 pg/mL and ≥200 pg/mL were considered as B12 vitamin deficiency and normal, respectively.
The patients were divided into two groups according to their diagnosis. The patients who were diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorder were treated as group 1 and the patients without these diagnoses as group 2. Group 1 and group 2 were compared in terms of vitamin B12 deficiency. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics as mean and standard deviation for continuous variables and frequency and percentage for categorical data were used. Chi-square test was used for the comparison. Significance was assessed at a 95% safety interval and p <0.05 was considered significant.
Results: It was seen that vitamin B12 levels were measured in 255,852 of patients who applied to our hospital during the study period. Vitamin B12 deficiency (<200 pg/ml) was detected in 217 of the patients (16.1%) in Group 1 and 40,442 of the patients (15.9%) in Group 2. The vitamin B12 levels of 1,129 patients in Group 1 and 214,064 in Group 2 were normal. The difference in their incidences was not statistically significant (p=0.864)
Conclusion: We did not find any significant data for the presence of vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with depression or anxiety disorders. There is a need for prospective, controlled studies to make a more precise interpretation on the topic.
