Assessment of the clinical accuracy and reliability of online video content on prefabricated zirconia crowns in primary teeth

Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the content quality, reliability, and viewer engagement of YouTube™ videos on pediatric zirconia crowns and to assess their potential as an informational resource. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated YouTube™ videos on pediatric zirconia crowns identified using keywords derived from Google Trends. Following predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 56 English-language videos were included. Video characteristics (source, duration, views, likes, and comments) were recorded. Content quality, reliability, and viewer engagement were assessed using the Video Content Usefulness Score (VCUS), Global Quality Scale (GQS), and modified DISCERN (mDISCERN), respectively. Viewer engagement was analyzed using the view ratio and interaction index. Statistical analyses were performed using non-parametric tests, correlation analyses, and linear regression models (p<0.05). Results: Most videos demonstrated a moderate level of content usefulness (71.4%), while only 14.3% were classified as highly useful. Median VCUS, GQS, and mDISCERN scores indicated low-to-moderate content quality and reliability. Video source was not significantly associated with content quality or reliability (p>0.05). Highly useful videos were significantly longer but showed lower engagement metrics compared to videos with lower usefulness (p<0.05). Regression analysis revealed that GQS was the strongest predictor of usefulness (p<0.001), whereas view count and interaction metrics were not associated with content usefulness. Conclusions: YouTube™ videos on pediatric zirconia crowns generally provide information of limited reliability and content quality, despite moderate levels of viewer engagement. Popularity indicators such as views and likes do not reliably reflect content usefulness or informational value. Therefore, the development of evidence-based, structured, and professionally oriented digital content by pediatric dental professionals and academic institutions may contribute to improving the quality and reliability of online information related to pediatric restorative dentistry.
