Global Academic Perspective on Carbon Footprint and Climate Change Studies

Öz

Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have significantly impacted the climate system, alongside natural climate variability. Transitioning to a low-carbon economy has become a global priority, and the concept of carbon footprint has gained prominence due to the critical role of CO₂ emissions. This study analyzes scientific trends in climate change and carbon footprint research by examining publications from 2011 to 2025 in the Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases. A total of 9,335 articles in Scopus and 6,642 in WOS were initially identified, from which 111 publications were selected for detailed analysis. Findings indicate a notable increase in both the quantity and depth of research in this field. Bibliometric analysis highlights that studies are mainly concentrated in environmental engineering and sustainable development, while social sciences remain underrepresented. The majority of publications originate from the USA, China, and Germany, pointing to the need for capacity-building in developing countries. Frequently used keywords include ‘‘sustainability,’’ ‘‘renewable energy,’’ and ‘‘greenhouse gas emissions,’’ suggesting these topics will remain central in future research. The study also identifies knowledge gaps and understudied areas, providing quantitative insight into the development and focus of academic studies. Overall, this research offers a strategic perspective for guiding future investigations and understanding global trends in efforts to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability.
