Sustainability of the Mind in the Face of Transhumanist Developments: A New Reflection-Based Conceptualization
Öz
The dualistic opposition established by modernity between human beings and nature gradually evolved into the belief that nature could be dominated by humanity. This understanding has resulted in the exploitation of nature and has become one of the principal causes of today's environmental crises. Consequently, sustainability and ecological concerns have emerged as central issues in contemporary thought, fostering a growing ecological awareness aimed at protecting the environment. However, while these approaches focus on environmental sustainability, they largely overlook the transformation of the human mind that generates and sustains such ecological consciousness. Faced with the unprecedented volume of information produced by scientific and technological developments, the human mind is increasingly challenged in transforming information into knowledge and knowledge into meaningful and critical understanding. Therefore, the sustainability of the human mind, alongside environmental sustainability, has become a fundamental philosophical problem.
This study aims to conceptualize the sustainability of the mind from a philosophical perspective within the context of transhumanist developments. Drawing upon Félix Guattari's notion of mental ecology, it argues that the human mind, like ecological systems, constitutes a dynamic structure that requires preservation. The study examines the effects of digitalization, artificial intelligence, and transhumanist developments on mental processes and argues that philosophical reflection provides a fundamental practice through which individuals critically engage with their own thinking, strengthen their capacity for critical thought, meaning-making, and conceptual production. Ultimately, the study proposes the sustainability of the mind as a new philosophical conceptualization within contemporary philosophical discourse and develops its theoretical framework through the concept of philosophical reflection.
