Abstract
This article is about the linear static analysis of laminated composite plates for cylindrical bending case by a new layerwise finite element. Finite elements, based on the assumption that the in-plane displacement fields are continuous functions of the thickness coordinate, results in all transverse stresses are discontinuous at layer interfaces contrary to the actual transverse stress state . To consider zig-zag effect of the in-plane displacement fields and overcome the discontinuity of transverse stress state at layer interfaces, a new layerwise finite element which has four nodes (cubic) per side in plan and three nodes (quadratic) in the thickness direction is developed. The linear static analysis results, relating to the cylindrical deflection of laminated composite plates, obtained by the new layerwise finite element, compared with the three dimensional elasticity solutions in the literature
